Powered Offroad Wheelchair

There are several electric off road wheelchairs out there, from the mild to the wild. There is also a company the will take your old power chair and convert it to an all terrain chair. We have not tested any of these, but we will suggest some options based on our experience off road. A good power off road wheelchair should be as narrow as possible without sacrificing stability. It should have large all terrain tires and have a two wheel or 4 wheel drive system. Range and ground clearance are also very important. All of these wheelchairs are expensive, but that is just the nature of the beast.

There are power off road wheelchairs that use large tires and some that use tracks. Generally, the chairs that use tracks are wider to accommodate this system. The track chairs seem like they can go anywhere, but most trails can be quite narrow. The track system may also damage the trail more, but this is just speculation. We will put links to all the powered off road wheelchairs on our Links page, but here we will focus primarily on chairs that use tires.

Manufacturers

Cycle QMX Urban Sport
The QMX Urban Sport is a relatively new addition to the powered adaptive sports scene. The design is simple, but very well done. It would easily take on the rough conditions the you will find on the more "interesting" trails. With it's fat tires and electric motor dirt, sand and snow will not be a concern. A few upgrades from the stock options would be recommended. We advice you add the posi differential and the lithium ion batteries. These batteries will give about 4 hours of fun time. The great thing about these batteries is that they are very small and lightweight. So, you can easily pack several and extend your ride time significantly. The other great thing about this rig is the price. At around $5,000 with a well equipped model this is the least expensive way to explore the great outdoors with a powered drive system.

Zoom Wheelchair
The Zoom chair is very impressive. We really like the drive system, the range and it's apparent off road capabilities. The batteries can be swapped out easily if you have an extra set. If you carry an extra set of batteries you could have a range of about 50 miles.

Boma 7 All Terrain Wheelchair
The Boma 7 looks great too, but it has about half the range as the Zoom. It seems a bit bigger than the zoom as well. It utilizes a two wheel rear drive system which should get you anywhere you need to go. You can also swap out the batteries quickly as well. The capabilities seem very impressive from the videos we have seen. The main problem is that it is not currently sold in the United States. You would have to purchase it from the UK which increases the cost dramatically.

Viking 4x4 All Terrain Wheelchair
The Viking Wheelchair looks impressive. The capabilities seem to be great. The seat tilts for more more comfort and pressure relief. The seat sits rather high, but it seems stabile. It does not appear to have an easily removable battery and the range is about 19 miles.

Extreme X8 Wheelchair
This has the most adjustments out of all the wheelchairs. The seat raises, lowers and reclines. Off road capabilities look good. It utilizes 4 powerful motors on each wheel. The range is approximately 15.5 miles. This chair would work great for high level quads.

Cajun Mobility
Another great option. The batteries can not be easily removed. The seat is adjustable up, down and it reclines. Ground clearance is 4.5 inches. I can't find any information on range.

4x4 Wheelchair Conversions
This company will take your old power wheelchair and turn it into an off road beast. They will do 4 wheel drive and six wheel drive conversions. Whatever you dream up, they seem to be able to deliver.

Global Extreme Mobility
I can't find a website for this wheelchair, but the YouTube videos look very interesting. Their chairs go from mild to wild and look like they'll get you almost anywhere.

Segfree
This is a seat attachment for a Segway (a 2 wheeled self balancing electric personal vehicle). This looks very promising, it solves a lot of issues you might come across on a trail. Our only concern is how it preforms on steep inclines and declines. Range is about 19.5 miles to 25 miles depending on the model. No information about ground clearance. It has an adjustable seat.

AddSeat
Another Segway seat attachment. This also has an adjustable seat.

Blumil
Another Segway seat attachment.

Sui Generis
Another Segway seat attachment.

Going Wheelchair
Another Segway seat attachment.

Freedom GlidR
Another Segway seat attachment.

Freee Wheelchair
Another Segway seat attachment.
